The Dangers of Second Hand Gunsmoke?
I hear they're thinking about banning smoking in the military. Even for
soldiers in
combat. Because it's dangerous for their health and costs the defense department
money for healthcare. Smoking, I mean, not combat. Well, I guess combat could
be regarded as a health hazard too, what with people getting their arms and legs
blown off and such, but that's a necessary part of war, and I've never read any
studies that suggest that second-hand gunsmoke is bad for you.
Do you want to try and tell some Marine on the front lines with an
M-16
and a beltful of grenades he can't have a cigarette to destress? I
wouldn't!
Expecting them to go cold turkey might be a bit much to ask, so I suppose we'd
have to get them some Nicorette gum. GlaxoSmithKline, who manufactures it, could
get a fat contract and even maybe give the military a bulk discount and still
make a pretty penny.
During the last real war, it was smokers vs. non-smoker.

Adolf Hitler was a vehement anti-smoker and the
first anti-smoking ordinances were enacted by
the Nazi regime. Hitler even vowed to end smoking in the military at the end of
the war. I wish he'd
banned it for them before that, they'd have probably lost a little quicker, but
apparently Hitler had
better sense than to try something like that in the middle of a war. Adolf would
be proud of the USA today.
FDR? I'm not so sure.
